Kohima: The Ministry of Education has approved the establishment of an Indian Knowledge System (IKS) Research Center in Nagaland University.
The sole central university in the state, Nagaland University, will host the newly approved IKS research center dedicated to studying indigenous water management in agriculture and ethnic culinary practices of Nagaland’s tribal communities.
The traditional water management practices in Nagaland are deeply rooted in the community’s culture. These include rainwater harvesting through ponds or wooden tanks, terracing to control agricultural erosion, spring water management and bamboo pipes for long-distance water transportation.
On the other hand, Nagaland cuisines are characterized by bold flavors and local ingredients with traditional cooking techniques passed down through generations.
The study will contribute to understanding the role of indigenous knowledge in sustaining agriculture in Nagaland amongst changing environmental conditions.
Through research, education and mentoring, the IKS project will assess the relevance of these traditional systems in today’s climate and agricultural context, identify potential gaps and suggest improvements.
