Kolkata: The state government of West Bengal has received proposals from different quarters about renaming four metro stations.
Incidentally, these four stations belong to four different lines of the Kolkata Metro. The proposers have also suggested the preferred new names for the stations.
The first one is the Khidirpur station in the Joka-Dharmatala line (Purple Line). St Thomas School in Khidirpur has proposed renaming the station as either St Thomas School Khidirpur or Khidirpur St Thomas School.
The VIP Road/Teghoria station in the Kavi Subhash/Bimanbandar Metro line (Orange Line) is proposed to be named after Harichand Guruchand Thakur. This has been proposed by All India Matua Mahasangha, Sridham Thakurnagar, Thakurbari and Rebati Ranjan Roy of Tegharia.
The Kishore Kumar Fan Club (Dunlop) has proposed renaming any one station between Howrah Maidan, Esplanade, Sealdah or Writers Building on the East West Metro Line (Green Line) after the legendary singer.
And lastly, the Kolkata Metro Chief Operation Manager has proposed to rename the Jaihind station as Jaihind Bimanbandar on the Orange Line.
Passengers might not otherwise realise that Jaihind is going to be the metro station for Netaji Subhash International Airport.
This is going to be the largest underground metro station in Asia and will be a terminal for one line towards Noapara and the others towards Kabi Subhash or New Garia.
The metro stations’ renaming process is looked at by the state government only. Currently, the proposals are with the Transport Department. These will now go to the Finance Department. Once they receive the state government approvals, the final confirmations will come from the Railway Ministry.
