Kolkata: The Project Monitoring Group under the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) is scheduled to meet this week to discuss two stumbling blocks for the New Garia – Airport Metro Orange Line project of the Kolkata Metro.
This involves the construction of the 366 m viaduct at the Chingrighata crossing on the EM Bypass. This has been stalled for over two months now as the West Bengal government is yet to permit a traffic block to lift concrete segments for the two spans.
The other pending issue is the permission for another traffic block to construct an overhead walkway for pedestrians headed to Beleghata Metro Station from the EM Bypass.
The meeting will also include railway officials, officials from the implementing agency, RVNL and senior representatives of the state government.
The Kolkata metro Orange Line is now functional on a 5.4 km stretch between New Garia and Ruby. Trial runs are also underway in the next 4.4 km stretch from Ruby to Beleghata.
The construction of the 4.46 km Beleghata – Sector V section is almost complete except for the 366 m gap on the Bypass and the pedestrian crossover point at Beleghata station.
Without the pedestrian walkway access to the Beleghata Metro station will not be feasible. A pillar will be constructed in the middle of the road to support the walkway.
The 366 m gap lies between Beleghata and Gour Kishore (Chingrighata) stations. The viaduct would cross the Bypass, and work has been stalled since 2 February pending traffic police approval.
