Shillong: The Meghalaya government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to facilitate the operationalisation of Baljek Airport in West Garo Hills.
Baljek Airport will be a crucial step towards enhancing regional connectivity, particularly for the Garo Hills region. Jengjal is set to emerge as a significant centre in Garo Hills with the activation of Baljek Airport.
While AAI will manage and operate the airport, the Meghalaya government is in talks with the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation to operationalise a 19-seater flight under RCS-UDAN between Shillong and Baljek.
The Central Government is also planning a new all-weather airport in Sikkim to boost tourism.
The current Pakyong airport (the lone airport in Sikkim) often faces low visibility issues. This often leads to the closure of services for months on end.
