Shillong: Meghalaya has widely deployed emerging technologies to emphasise the transformative power of tech in governance, using it as a tool to solve real-world problems and improve existing public systems.
CM Conrad K Sangma highlighted a host of use cases on tech deployment to emphasise these points while inaugurating a workshop on emerging technologies in Shillong.
The workshop was organised by the Department of IT & Communication, Government of Meghalaya, in collaboration with the National e-Governance Division.
CM Sangma demonstrated the efficacy of real-time digital governance with Meghalaya’s e-Proposal and the digital file movement systems under the Meghalaya Enterprise Architecture Framework.
This allowed the CM to seamlessly clear government files on his mobile device. Overall, the successful implementation of e-file systems has significantly enhanced administrative efficiency.
Meghalaya has established the Drone Technology Lab, which is now being used for high-resolution mapping in sectors like mining, forestry and tourism.
Meghalaya has also reduced maternal mortality by nearly 50 per cent through the use of technology in tracking and supporting high-risk pregnancies.
The state has installed IoT sensors across its 70,000 water springs to gather real-time data for improved water resources management. This project aims to support better planning and conservation efforts.
Meghalaya plans to implement a blockchain-based employee data and promotion tracking system. This would reduce delays and enhance transparency in recruitment and career progress across government departments.
The state also plans to replicate Japanese farming methods using robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) in greenhouse farming. This could be used in crops like strawberries and lettuce to enhance agricultural productivity.
Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies will be explored in Meghalaya’s tourism sector to create immersive digital experiences and global visibility for the state’s cultural and natural heritage. VR is also being used in legal education in the state. It has been integrated at the National Law University in Shillong.
The state is focusing on local language accessibility too. The Kasi and Garo languages are being integrated into the AI-powered Bhashini app.
Meghalaya plans further collaboration with NeGD, IndiaAI and other partners to ensure inclusive technological progress across the state from urban centres to remote villages.
The State Government’s Digital Meghalaya vision is building an overall digital ecosystem for the state and shaping future-ready governance.
