New Delhi: The Ministry of Finance has instructed all central ministries, departments and Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) to stop spending public money on gifts during Diwali and other festivals, reinforcing its push for stricter fiscal discipline.
In an office memorandum issued by the Department of Expenditure, the ministry made it clear that “no expenditure shall be incurred on gifts and related items for Diwali and other festivals by Ministries/Departments and other organs of the Government of India.” The order, approved by the Secretary (Expenditure), takes effect immediately.
Officials said the directive is part of a broader effort to curb non-essential spending and ensure more prudent use of public funds. Ministries and CPSEs have been asked to adhere strictly to the instructions ahead of the festive season.
