New Delhi: The Union Government has appointed senior IAS Sunil Paliwal of the 1993 batch as the new Chairman of the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI).
The post falls under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and has been temporarily placed at the Secretary level for this appointment.
Paliwal is currently the Chairperson of the Chennai Port Trust. During his tenure there, he worked on improving port operations, expanding capacity, and pushing key infrastructure upgrades. His move to IWAI comes at a time when the government is giving more attention to inland water transport as a low-cost and eco-friendly option for moving goods across the country.
With years of experience in ports, shipping, and waterways, Paliwal is expected to speed up projects under the National Waterways programme. His focus will likely include modernising inland water transport systems and strengthening links between waterways and other transport networks.
