New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs has appointed senior IAS Sanjeev Khirwar (1994 batch, AGMUT cadre) as the new Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).Â
Khirwar succeeds IAS Ashwani Kumar (1992 batch, AGMUT cadre), who has been posted to Jammu and Kashmir in a strategic role.Â
Khirwar began his career as a Sub-Divisional Magistrate in Chandigarh. Over the years, he has served in several states and Union Territories, including Goa, Arunachal Pradesh, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. In Goa, he held senior roles such as Excise Commissioner and Finance Commissioner. He also served as Private Secretary to the Union Minister for Women and Child Development.
In Delhi, he has previously held key positions, including Principal Secretary (Revenue), Divisional Commissioner, and Secretary in departments such as Health and Family Welfare, Finance, and Environment. During his tenure in Ladakh from 2022 to 2026, he oversaw critical portfolios, including school education, health, and science and technology.
His return is expected to improve coordination across civic departments and address Delhi’s complex urban challenges.
