New Delhi: The Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC), the technical arm of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) to collaborate on advanced telecom research and global standardisation efforts.
The partnership aims to jointly develop India-specific standards, testing frameworks and technical contributions for emerging communication technologies such as 6G, artificial intelligence in telecom, non-terrestrial networks (NTNs), Internet of Things (IoT), digital twins, immersive systems and quantum communication.
It also seeks to strengthen India’s participation and leadership in global standard-setting bodies, including ITU-T, ITU-R and 3GPP.
The MoU was signed on 8 January by Amit Kumar Srivastava, Deputy Director General (Mobile Technologies), TEC, and Prof. Tarun Gupta, Dean (R&D), IIT Kanpur, in the presence of IIT Kanpur Director Prof. Manindra Agrawal and senior officials from both institutions.
Under the agreement, TEC and IIT Kanpur will undertake joint studies covering 4G, 5G and future network architectures, AI-enabled telecom systems, advanced radio and antenna technologies, satellite and non-terrestrial networks and secure quantum communication.
Officials said the collaboration will enhance India’s influence in global telecom standardisation while supporting the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision through indigenous research, design and innovation in critical communication technologies.
