Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on 9 January signalled the state’s entry into mobile phone manufacturing, indicating that a manufacturing unit is expected to be set up in Assam soon.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sarma wrote, “Made in India, Made in Assam. Coming Soon: A Mobile phone manufacturing unit in Assam!” The post was accompanied by a video showing the assembly of mobile phones. However, the Chief Minister did not share details about the proposed unit or its location.

According to earlier statements made by Sarma this year, the Assam government is in advanced stages of discussions to secure a mobile manufacturing facility, which is expected to generate employment and strengthen the state’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem.
The development comes against the backdrop of Assam’s broader push to emerge as an electronics manufacturing hub. Last year, the state government announced a Rs 25,000 crore incentive scheme to boost electronics manufacturing.
In addition, Tata Electronics has committed an investment of Rs 27,000 crore to set up a semiconductor chip assembly and testing plant in Assam, which is expected to become operational between March and April this year. The state government has also announced plans to develop a Ratan Tata Electronics City, further reinforcing its long-term manufacturing ambitions.
