New Delhi: The Ministry of Railways has proposed merging IRCON International Limited with Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, a move that could significantly reshape India’s railway infrastructure sector if it receives regulatory approval.
The proposal seeks to consolidate two of the country’s key railway construction and project implementation companies into a single entity. Officials indicated that the objective is to reduce operational overlap, optimise resources and strengthen the combined organisation’s capacity to undertake large-scale infrastructure projects in India and overseas.
Both IRCON and RVNL operate as Central Public Sector Enterprises under the administrative control of the Railways Ministry and have played major roles in executing railway lines, bridges, electrification projects and other transport infrastructure initiatives.
The proposal will now go through a multi-layered approval process. It requires examination by the Ministry of Finance and the Department of Public Enterprises, followed by a final decision from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs.
Since both companies are publicly listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange of India, the proposed merger would also require approvals from shareholders and creditors and compliance with regulations of the Securities and Exchange Board of India before it can move forward.
