New Delhi: Taranjit Singh Sandhu has been appointed as the new Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Delhi as part of a recent administrative restructuring.
Vinai Kumar Saxena, the current LG of Delhi, has been transferred and appointed as the new LG of Ladakh. He replaces Kavinder Gupta, who stepped down from the post less than a year after assuming office in July 2025.Â
About Taranjit Singh Sandhu
Sandhu is widely regarded as one of India’s most experienced diplomats in United States affairs and has served multiple assignments in Washington, D.C. He joined the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) in 1988 and has held several important diplomatic positions across the world.Â
Sandhu also served as India’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka from January 2017 to January 2020. Earlier in his career, he worked at the High Commission of India in Colombo as the head of the political wing between 2000 and 2004. He also played a role in establishing India’s embassy in Ukraine in the early 1990s, where he headed the political and administrative wings from 1992 to 1994.
Sandhu’s diplomatic career includes postings in the former Soviet Union and as Consul General in Frankfurt between 2011 and 2013. In addition, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Washington from 2013 to 2017 and held assignments at the United Nations in New York from 2005 to 2009.

Saxena, who took over as the 22nd Lieutenant Governor of Delhi on May 26, 2022, brings over three decades of experience in the corporate and social sectors. Before his tenure in Delhi, he served as Chairman of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission from October 2015 to May 2022, where he introduced several initiatives to strengthen the khadi and village industries sector and improve the livelihoods of artisans across the country.
