Kolkata: The total number of registered green fuel vehicles in West Bengal touched 2.6 lakh in February, making it one of the leading states in sustainability.
The number of two-wheelers was 75,965, three-wheelers were 1.6 lakh, motor cars 17,822 and 4,083 goods carriages (three wheelers).
West Bengal is emerging as a model for green development through a mix of circular economy initiatives, renewable energy expansion and water conservation programs.
The West Bengal government has initiated several initiatives towards green development, too.
These include excavation of around 800 km of creeks designed to trap rainwater and create a sweet water ecosystem that supports shrimp cultivation.
Mangroves were planted along 800 km of these creeks and these leaves became food for the shrimps.
The circular economy initiatives also helped women SHGs engaged in shrimp farming. The initiative led to a $500 million export of shrimp.
Solar power projects with a combined capacity of 3,763 MW are nearing completion, including a project supported by Germany’s KfW Bank.
There are, in addition, land and water conservation initiatives such as Matir Srishti and Jal Dharo Jal Bharo.
