New Delhi: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has covered over 1.03 lakh schools nationwide to facilitate mandatory biometric updates (MBU) for students under Aadhaar. The initiative has enabled nearly 1.2 crore children to complete their biometric updates within their school premises.
The mission-mode drive began in September 2025 following integration with the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) platform of the Department of School Education & Literacy.
The linkage allowed authorities to track the MBU status of students and identify those due for updates, leading to the organisation of on-campus camps.
UIDAI’s regional and state offices have coordinated with state education departments, district administrations and schools to implement the exercise. Around 4,000 biometric machines are currently deployed, with plans to increase capacity to speed up coverage.
Updating children’s biometrics ensures smoother authentication for government benefits, scholarships and entrance exams such as NEET, JEE and CUET. The update is being offered free of cost for children aged 7 to 15 for one year from 1 October 2025.
