New Delhi, May 4 (APAC Media): All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi (AIIMS Delhi) has introduced India’s first portable bedside MRI system, allowing doctors to carry out brain scans for critically ill patients directly inside ICUs and emergency wards.
This ultra-low-field MRI machine can be moved to the patient’s bedside, reducing the need to shift critical patients to conventional MRI facilities.
The system is currently being used at the Centre for Neurological Conditions under Dr Shailesh Gaikwad. According to doctors, the technology is expected to speed up diagnosis in cases involving stroke, trauma, paediatric neurological disorders, post-surgery care, and continuous ICU monitoring.
Unlike conventional MRI machines which require patients to be transported to specialised imaging rooms, the new system enables scans to be performed within the ICU itself.
This is particularly beneficial for patients on ventilator support or those in critical condition, where movement can pose additional health risks. Doctors believe the technology could help speed up treatment decisions during medical emergencies.
The portable MRI system was introduced after receiving regulatory approval in India and is backed by Radiosurgery Global. Experts say the development could improve access to advanced neuroimaging and support research in bedside neurological diagnostics across the country.
Such mobile bedside MRI systems are already being used in hospitals across countries such as the US, Canada, Australia, the UK, New Zealand, and several European nations.
