Chandigarh, June 15 (APAC Media): Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on Monday inaugurated a modern Skill Development Centre of Excellence in Faridkot, aimed at enhancing employability and creating livelihood opportunities for local youth.
On the occasion, the Governor also dedicated a newly renovated astroturf hockey stadium at Government Brijindra College to the youth of the region.
Centre to Provide Free Skill Training
The Faridkot facility is the fifth Skill Development Centre of Excellence set up by the Sun Foundation in Punjab. The centre will offer free vocational training and placement support to nearly 1,000 youth every year.
Addressing the gathering, Governor Kataria praised Dr. Sahney and the Sun Foundation for their continued efforts in promoting social welfare and youth empowerment.
He said the centre would help equip young people with industry-relevant skills and create pathways towards employment, self-reliance and economic growth.
NSDC-Certified Courses
According to officials, the centre has been established through a combination of public development support and private philanthropy, with over Rs 1 crore contributed by Dr. Sahney for the project.
The facility will operate at an estimated monthly cost of around Rs 6 lakh, which will be fully borne by the Sun Foundation to ensure that all training programmes remain free for students.
The centre will offer National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC)-certified courses in nine industry-focused trades.
Sun Foundation Targets Skilling 10,000 Punjabi Youth Every Year
The Rajya Sabha MP, Vikramjeet Sahney said the Sun Foundation is already operating similar centres in Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, and Pahuwind.
Over the past year, more than 5,500 youth trained at these centres have secured employment opportunities, he said.
The Faridkot facility, he added, is another step towards the foundation’s larger goal of providing skill training to over 10,000 youth across Punjab annually.
