New Delhi, June 15 (APAC Media): India has taken a major step towards cleaner mobility with the approval of the 100% Ethanol fuel framework.
Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that the government has finalized regulations allowing vehicles to run on E100 fuel.
The move creates a legal framework for the manufacturing, testing and certification of Ethanol fuel compatible vehicles. It is expected to encourage automakers to introduce ethanol-powered models in the coming years.
According to Gadkari, the decision will help reduce India’s dependence on imported crude oil while creating new opportunities for farmers and the biofuel industry.
The approval removes a major regulatory hurdle for automobile companies. Several manufacturers, including Maruti Suzuki, Toyota, Hyundai, MG Motor and Suzuki, have already been exploring flex-fuel technologies.
Maruti Suzuki has previously showcased a flex-fuel WagonR prototype capable of operating on higher ethanol blends.
The new framework is expected to accelerate the development of vehicles that can run entirely on ethanol.
Flex-fuel vehicles are specially designed to use different blends of petrol and ethanol. Depending on their design, these vehicles can run on petrol, E20, E85 and even E100 fuel.
They require modified fuel systems and engine calibration to safely operate on higher ethanol concentrations.
The government believes ethanol can become an effective alternative to petrol. Besides reducing oil imports, the move is expected to strengthen energy security and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
The agricultural sector could also emerge as a major beneficiary. Higher demand for ethanol is likely to create additional income opportunities for sugarcane growers and other agricultural producers. It could also boost biofuel production and support rural economies.
The approval of the E100 framework signals India’s broader strategy to diversify its transportation energy sources.
Along with electric vehicles, CNG and hydrogen, biofuels are expected to play an important role in the country’s clean mobility transition.
Industry experts believe the success of ethanol-powered vehicles will depend on factors such as ethanol availability, affordability and consumer acceptance.
However, the latest decision marks an important milestone in India’s journey towards sustainable transportation.
