Amaravati, July 28(APAC Media): The Andhra Pradesh government has launched an AI-powered flood alert system to improve urban flood forecasting and emergency response. The new platform is designed to predict flooding before it occurs, giving officials more time to prepare and reduce damage during heavy rainfall.
Developed by the Real Time Governance Society (RTGS) through its AWARE Division, the platform was built in collaboration with the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) and researchers from IIT Gandhinagar. It combines artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, satellite-based terrain mapping and hydrological modelling to forecast rainfall up to 48 hours in advance and issue flash flood alerts up to six hours before a possible event.
The system will first be deployed in Vijayawada, a city that frequently faces flooding during the monsoon, especially in low-lying areas connected to the Budameru stream.
Using nearly 30 years of historical flood data and a high-resolution digital elevation model created from satellite imagery, the platform can identify flood-prone wards, estimate possible water accumulation and detect drainage channels where silt buildup could increase flood risk. These insights are expected to help local authorities clear drains and deploy emergency teams before heavy rainfall begins.
When a flood threat is detected, the platform will automatically send alerts to APSDMA, which can then issue warnings to district collectors, municipal officials and other response agencies. The state government plans to expand the AI-based flood monitoring system to other urban local bodies across Andhra Pradesh after its rollout in Vijayawada. The initiative reflects a broader shift towards data-driven disaster preparedness and early warning systems.
