New Delhi, September 15 (APAC Media): The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is planning a major technology upgrade of its 1033 National Highway Helpline, introducing artificial intelligence, real-time location tracking and smart emergency-response systems to make assistance faster for highway users across India.
AI to Transform Highway Emergency Response
The upgraded platform will combine AI-powered tools with human operators to improve the speed and accuracy. Key features proposed for the system include:
- Real-time caller location tracking to help responders reach highway users faster.
- AI-enabled multilingual support to handle calls across Indian languages.
- Smart dispatch systems to identify and deploy the appropriate ambulance, crane or patrol vehicle.
- Proactive incident alerts to provide timely information on highway emergencies.
Human operators will continue to manage calls, particularly emergencies requiring judgement and decision-making.
1033 Handles 15,000 Calls Every Day
Operational since 2018, the 24×7 1033 helpline currently covers more than 1.46 lakh km of National Highways and receives around 15,000 calls every day.
The service provides ambulance assistance, vehicle breakdown support, crane and patrol services, along with help for toll plaza and FASTag-related issues.
IHMCL Seeks Technology Partners
Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), promoted by NHAI, has invited an Expression of Interest (EOI) from companies and consortia to develop, deploy, operate and maintain the Next Generation 1033 Helpline and Call Centre.
The project will require expertise in AI, software development, digital platforms, 24×7 call-centre operations and emergency-response services.
The initiative marks a significant step towards creating a smarter, faster and technology-enabled highway safety ecosystem.
