India Innovation Index 2020 consists of 36 indicators- The index ranks states and Union Territories based on how they support innovation and embrace disruptive technologies
New Delhi: The second edition of the India Innovation Index is going to be released by NITI Aayog today in a virtual event by the vice chairman Dr Rajiv Kumar. The first edition of the index was launched in October 2019. The index ranks different states and UTs based on their efforts to support innovation. The index intends to foster a spirit of competitive federalism among states and UTs.
India Innovation Index 2020 has introduced more metrics and builds on the previous year’s methodology whilst providing a holistic outlook of the Indian innovation ecosystem. This year, the index comprises 36 indicators.
Apart from retaining parameters specific to the Indian economy, the framework has been updated by including globally- considered parameters for measuring innovation including percentage of gross domestic product spent on research and development.
India Innovation Index is in a way a report card highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of the states and UTs. The target is to showcase the government’s initiative to create an innovation-driven economy.
The states and union territories have been divided into 17 major states, 10 North –East and Hill States and Union Territories for effective comparison. They have been ranked on mainly two broad categories- outcome and governance. Overall, the framework of India Innovation Index 2020 consists of 36 indicators that include hard data 32 indicators and four composite indicators.
The index captures the trends and provides detailed analysis of the various factors that drive innovation at the country, state and district level. The idea is to enable policy makers identify catalysts of innovation at different levels by using the analysis.
NITI Aayog member Dr V K Saraswat and CEO Amitabh Kant will also be present at the event.
