With several state governments giving the green signal to reopen schools, the education sector that lost 5.4 million jobs by the end of December quarter would start hiring say industry experts. The sector had employed 15 million in 2018-19 which had come down to 9.1 million by December 2020. Tech platforms too could ramp up hiring in the new academic year, aver experts. According to a study by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy, employment fell to 14.5 million in the March quarter of 2020.
When schools reopen, students would be split into smaller sized groups and the requirement for teachers would grow. Covid-19 restrictions mandate schools to have fewer students in the classroom which increases the need for teachers.
Apart from hiring teachers for the physical classroom, hiring for online tutors is expected to boom. The coronavirus pandemic has ushered an era of online learning. Hybrid learning is here to stay as students have now got used to remote learning set up. Several edtech startups have ramped up hiring to meet the surge in enrollments.
Teachers are all on the cloud and there is a new found confidence as a majority of them have become comfortable with technology. The ongoing vaccination drive may help education institutions reopen with confidence.

Madhavan Nair, an educational consultant based out of Kottayam says, “Several schools are now calling back teachers who were given a break. One can expect a surge in hiring in the next academic year.”
