Sushil Chandra, 63 has been appointed as Chief Election Commissioner of India. He will serve till May 14, 2022 before retiring. Sunil Arora the outgoing Chief Election Commissioner of India demitted the Office of the Chief Election Commissioner on April 12, 2021.
Mr Chandra during his term would oversee the conduct of polls in five states-Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Uttarakhand and Manipur.
Before his two-year tenure as an Election Commissioner, Sushil Chandra was Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) and, since his appointment, has worked on 10 state elections.
Mr Chandra’s ascension to the Election Commission’s top post comes at a time opposition parties have been critical of the conduct of elections in several states and are asking for a smooth and fair conduct of polls. The opposition parties have pointed about transgressions.
