New Delhi: The results of assembly elections in five key regions — West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry – will be announced tomorrow. These elections are being seen as a crucial political milestone in 2026, with outcomes expected to influence both regional dynamics and the broader national political narrative.
The contests across these states have been intense and multi-cornered. Regional parties continue to hold strong ground in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, while in Assam, the ruling establishment faces a significant challenge from the opposition. Kerala, known for its alternating power trend, presents another closely watched battle. Meanwhile, the smaller assembly in Puducherry makes every seat critical in determining the final outcome.
Across the five states/UTs, a total of 824 assembly seats are at stake, making the majority arithmetic crucial for government formation. West Bengal has 294 seats with a majority mark of 148, while Tamil Nadu has 234 seats requiring 118 for a clear mandate. In Assam, parties need 64 out of 126 seats to form the government, whereas Kerala requires 71 out of 140 seats. The smaller assembly in Puducherry has 30 seats, with 16 needed for a majority, making every seat critical in determining the final outcome.
With counting set to begin tomorrow, political parties are on edge, closely watching every development. Exit polls have indicated varied trends across states, but the final verdict will only be clear once the votes are counted. The results are expected to shape future political strategies and could also set the tone for upcoming national elections in 2029.
