BHUBANESWAR: Rampant encroachment on zebra crossings by vehicles at almost all the important junctions of the city has compelled citizens to take to social media platforms to bring it to the notice of the city administration.
Despite launching rapid awareness drives, making announcements through loudspeakers and even penalising the violators at random places at times, zebra crossings violations continue unabated, putting pedestrians at risk.
Irked, a city resident, Shantiswarup Mahapatra, took to Twitter and posted a picture of such a violation and tweeted, “Can you do something to stop this Zebra Crossing encroachment by vehicles. Location: Traffic Square near Capital Hospital/Forest Park.”
However, despite tagging relevant authorities, Mahapatra received no response to his complaint. Realising there will be no action, Mahapatra replied to his own tweet, “I could recall what my father used to tell when I was learning to drive — ‘you should be careful for other’s mistakes’.” Not only on social media, but also at the ground level, people’s appeals continue to go unheard.
