Dhaka: State-run NTPC has marked its first overseas capacity addition with Bangladesh on its map. “The group recently added Unit-1, a 660 MW capacity, of the 1,320 MW (2×660) Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant (MSTPP) located in Rampal, Mongla, Bagerhat, Bangladesh. The new addition takes the Installed Capacity of NTPC to 72,304 MW,” said the Maharatna PSU on Wednesday.
“This demonstrates the company’s global reach and commitment to providing reliable and sustainable power. The project was executed in collaboration with the Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company Pvt Ltd (BIFPCL), a foreign joint venture company of NTPC Ltd,” a statement said.
After obtaining the required norms and approvals, MSTPP’s Unit 1 of NTPC has been included in the installed and commercial capacity of NTPC group.
The Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant is being constructed by the Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company (BIFPCL), a 50:50 joint venture between NTPC and the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB). The project is estimated to involve a capital investment of approximately USD 2 billion. The first unit of the project was initially planned to be commissioned in December 2021.
The main plant will comprise a turbine building, boiler structures, and integrated control and electrical building. It will require 4.7 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of coal. The project specifies usage of coal with a gross calorific value (GCV) of 5,400-6,300 kcal/kg, an average sulphur content of 0.6 percent and maximum moisture content of 15 percent.
