New Delhi: In a statement released on Wednesday, OpenAI, the artificial intelligence company, disclosed that Sam Altman would resume his role as Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The company also revealed a fresh set of board members, including Bret Taylor as Chair, Larry Summers, and Adam D’Angelo.
The announcement, initially made on the platform X (formerly Twitter) said, “We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam Altman to return to OpenAI as CEO with a new initial board of Bret Taylor (Chair), Larry Summers, and Adam D’Angelo. We are collaborating to figure out the details. Thank you so much for your patience through this.”
Responding to the news, Altman explained his decision to rejoin OpenAI, and said, “I love OpenAI, and everything I’ve done over the past few days has been in service of keeping this team and its mission together.”
Altman clarified that his choice to return to OpenAI was based on what he deemed best for both himself and the team. Acknowledging his recent association with Microsoft (msft), Altman expressed enthusiasm for the future, highlighting the support from the new board and Satya Nadella, the executive chairman and CEO of Microsoft.
The development follows OpenAI’s November 17 announcement of Altman’s departure from the board. The decision to part ways with Altman, a co-founder and influential figure in the AI ecosystem, was attributed to a loss of confidence in his leadership.
Satya Nadella, commenting on the changes to the OpenAI board, expressed encouragement and deemed it a crucial step toward achieving more stable, well-informed, and effective governance. Nadella highlighted the collaborative efforts with Altman, Greg (presumably referencin Microsoft hires former OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, sparks OpenAI revolt and a battle for supremacy

The statement also emphasised the commitment to strengthening the partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI for the advancement of the next generation of AI technology.
