Mumbai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), the nation’s longest bridge, in Maharashtra on Friday. Inaugurating the sea-bridge earlier in the day, he envisioned it as a “glimpse of what a developed India is going to look like,” emphasising facilities, prosperity, speed, and progress for all.
Addressing a public event, PM Modi highlighted the significance of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewari-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu, formerly known as MTHL. The 21.8-km-long bridge, developed at a cost of ₹18,000 crore by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), connects Sewri in Mumbai to Nhava Sheva in Uran taluka, Raigad district. Featuring a 16.5 km sea stretch and 5.5 km on land, the six-lane bridge will open for motorists on Saturday.
The Atal Setu drastically shortens the travel time between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai from 2 hours to just 20 minutes. Anticipating an average of 70,000 vehicles on the bridge, MMRDA projections estimate over 1.33 lakh vehicles by 2032, enhancing connectivity and promoting continuous mobility.
