New Delhi: ICICI Bank has now enabled Non-Resident Indian (NRI) customers in India to make instant payments through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) using their international mobile numbers. This is to improve the convenience of everyday transactions.
The feature, accessible through ICICI Bank’s mobile banking app, iMobile Pay, allows NRIs with NRE/NRO bank accounts in India to pay utility bills, engage in e-commerce activities and make merchant transactions using their international mobile numbers.
Before this initiative, NRIs had to go through a lengthy process of linking an Indian mobile number to their accounts to make UPI payments across countries like the USA, UK, UAE, Canada, Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong, Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.
The new service lets NRI customers make UPI payments by scanning Indian QR codes, transferring funds to a UPI ID, or sending money to an Indian mobile number or bank account.
Sidharatha Mishra, Head of Digital Channels and Partnerships at ICICI Bank, noted that this initiative removes the necessity for NRI customers in the above mentioned ten countries to change to an Indian mobile number for UPI transactions.
