New Delhi: India became the world’s third-largest solar power generator in 2023, surpassing Japan, thanks to rapid solar energy deployment. From ranking ninth in solar energy deployment in 2015, India jumped to a leading position by 2023, according to Ember’s “Global Electricity Review”.
According to the report, solar energy made up 5.5 per cent of global electricity production in 2023, with India contributing 5.8 per cent to its electricity grid and continuing its streak as the fastest-growing electricity source for the 19th year in a row, surpassing coal.
India added 18 terawatt hours (TWh) to its capacity, behind China (+156 TWh), the United States (+33 TWh), and Brazil (+22 TWh). Together, the four countries accounted for 75 per cent of global solar growth last year, with India witnessing the fourth-largest surge globally in solar generation in 2023.
According to Ember’s report, India’s contribution to solar-generated electricity increased from 0.5 per cent in 2015 to 5.8 per cent in 2023. India aims to derive 50 per cent of its cumulative electric power from non-fossil fuel-based sources by 2023, in line with the International Energy Agency’s “Net Zero Emissions” scenario for solar to make up 22 per cent of global electricity generation by that time.
