Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh government has signed an agreement with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to install 48 automatic weather stations across the state. These stations will provide real-time weather data, helping improve forecasts and better prepare for natural disasters.
Right now, the state has 22 weather stations run by the IMD. The new stations will be added in the first phase, with plans to expand to more areas later. This network will be especially helpful for agriculture, horticulture, and disaster management by improving early warnings and emergency responses.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said this step will strengthen the state’s disaster management system. In addition, Himachal Pradesh has secured Rs 890 crore from Agence Francaise de Developpement to support a major project focused on reducing disaster and climate risks.
The project will also upgrade fire stations, build earthquake-resistant structures, and set up nurseries to prevent landslides. It will strengthen the state’s disaster management agencies and improve satellite connectivity for better communication during emergencies.
