Agartala: Tripura Santiniketan Medical College (TSMC) has received approval from the National Medical Council (NMC) to start its MBBS course for 150 students in the 2024-25 academic year.
Chief Minister Manik Saha announced this during a state assembly session, adding that Tripura University has also granted its Consent of Affiliation to the college in West Tripura’s Ranirkhamar.
Fifty percent of the MBBS seats will be reserved for students from the northeastern state. However, Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman raised concerns about the high course fees, reportedly around Rs 1 crore, which could hinder worthy students from enrolling due to financial constraints.
Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury also expressed concerns regarding the process by which the private medical college was granted permission. In response, the chief minister defended the decision, stating that the state government had thoroughly evaluated the financial viability of the trust running the college over the past three years.
