New Delhi: In response to the growing threat of fraudulent calls and messages received by citizens, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in collaboration with Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) has rolled out an advanced system to block spam calls. This centralized system will identify and block incoming international spoofed calls even before they reach Indian telecom subscribers.
The system is being deployed in two phases. The first phase involves TSPs preventing calls spoofed with phone numbers of their own subscribers. In the second phase, a centralized system will be introduced which will eliminate the remaining spoofed calls across all TSPs. Till now, all the TSPs have successfully implemented the first phase of the system. According to DoT, the system has stopped 4.5 million spam calls from entering the Indian telecom network.
Despite the introduction of the system, fraudsters may still devise new methods to deceive the public. To address this issue, DoT has introduced the ‘Chakshu’ facility on the Sanchar Sathi Portal, wherein citizens can report fraud calls, SMS, and Whatsapp messages that they receive. This facility is expected to significantly protect citizens against cyber fraud.
