New Delhi: The Ministry of Tourism has appointed Gopinatha Kaiwara Venkateshappa as its new Director under the Central Staffing Scheme. Venkateshappa, an Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) officer from the 2008 batch, takes on this role following the recommendation by the Ministry of Railways for central deputation.
The Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) issued the appointment order, confirming that his tenure will last for five years or until further notice, whichever comes earlier. His selection aligns with the government’s practice of leveraging experienced officers from various services for key roles in central ministries.
Venkateshappa brings over years of administrative and logistical expertise, gained through his service with the Indian Railways. His appointment reflects an ongoing effort by the Ministry of Tourism to strengthen its leadership amid rising challenges in the sector, including recovery from the pandemic and increasing competition from global tourism markets.
The Ministry of Tourism has been focusing on initiatives such as heritage preservation, promoting eco-tourism, and boosting international tourism inflows. Venkateshappa’s role is expected to involve overseeing these programs and driving inter-ministerial collaboration to advance tourism’s economic contribution.
This appointment highlights the government’s strategy of integrating talent from diverse fields to address sector-specific demands. Venkateshappa’s background in railway traffic management could prove valuable in enhancing tourism-related infrastructure and accessibility across the country.
The Ministry of Tourism has yet to release further details about his immediate priorities in the role. However, the appointment signals the government’s intent to adopt a more structured approach in scaling up tourism projects nationwide.
