Chennai: Tamil Nadu has reached a significant milestone by registering over 10,000 startups with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), according to the state government. The rise in registrations highlights the growth of the state’s startup ecosystem, which has seen major progress over the last three years.
Rapid Growth in Startup Numbers
The number of DPIIT-registered startups in Tamil Nadu has surged from 2,300 in March 2021 to over 10,000 in 2024. This rapid growth has been attributed to initiatives led by StartupTN, the state’s agency responsible for supporting startups.
StartupTN has implemented various programs, including funding support, mentorship opportunities, and incubation facilities, which have played a key role in driving the ecosystem forward. Shivaraja Ramanathan, Mission Director and CEO of StartupTN, emphasized the importance of regional hubs in the state. Tamil Nadu currently has nine regional hubs and one metro hub in Chennai, providing startups with essential infrastructure.
Focus on Supporting Entrepreneurs
The state government has taken active steps to promote entrepreneurship, particularly among the youth. Programs under StartupTN aim to encourage young innovators and provide them with resources to grow their businesses. Ramanathan pointed out that the agency has focused on nurturing a culture of innovation, backed by state support.
