New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu delivered a compelling address on the occasion of the 76th Republic Day, spotlighting India’s strides in quantum computing, artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and cybersecurity. National Quantum Mission: A Leap into the Future
President Murmu began by emphasizing the National Quantum Mission, an ambitious initiative aimed at advancing quantum technologies in India. Announced in 2023, the mission aims to bolster research and development in quantum computing, quantum communication, and quantum materials.
She explained that quantum technologies hold immense potential in revolutionizing sectors such as healthcare, finance, defence, and secure communications. By fostering innovation and collaboration among academia, industries, and government, India is working to bridge the gap with global leaders in this field. The mission’s goal of developing quantum computers with capacities ranging from 50 to 1,000 qubits over the next decade reflects its transformative ambition.
“India’s investment in quantum research is not just an advancement in science but a commitment to building a secure and sustainable future,” the President remarked, emphasizing the importance of self-reliance in such strategic areas.

AI and Cyber-Physical Systems: Catalysts of Growth
The President also highlighted the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NMICPS), which has emerged as a critical framework for integrating AI, robotics, and cybersecurity into India’s socio-economic landscape. She described how AI-powered tools are being utilized across industries to enhance efficiency, improve decision-making, and address societal challenges such as healthcare access and education disparities.
Citing examples of AI applications, President Murmu spoke of its transformative role in agriculture, where predictive analytics and machine learning models are aiding farmers in optimizing yields. Similarly, AI’s application in healthcare helps diagnose diseases earlier and more accurately, while its use in transportation advances smart mobility solutions.
The NMICPS, established with a vision of creating technology platforms and research hubs, has been instrumental in driving innovation. India’s Rising Innovation Index
India’s rise in the Global Innovation Index (GII)—from 48th in 2020 to 39th in 2024—was another highlight of the President’s address. She attributed this success to the surge in intellectual property filings, particularly patents and trademarks, reflecting the country’s growing emphasis on innovation-driven growth.
She praised the academic and research institutions across the country for their contributions to this achievement, underscoring the collaboration between private enterprises and the government in fostering an innovation ecosystem. “India now ranks sixth globally in intellectual property filings, showcasing its ability to turn ideas into impactful solutions,” she noted.
Cybersecurity: Safeguarding the Digital Frontier
In an era of increasing digitization, President Murmu placed significant emphasis on cybersecurity, describing it as an indispensable element of national security. She outlined the government’s commitment to enhancing cyber defences through the deployment of AI-powered monitoring systems and robust cybersecurity frameworks.
The President also drew attention to global challenges, including cyberattacks on critical infrastructure, data breaches, and the misuse of emerging technologies. In response, India has been proactively investing in cybersecurity research and innovation, aiming to build a resilient digital infrastructure that can withstand evolving threats.
