New Delhi: Shaktikanta Das has been appointed as the Principal Secretary-2 to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Das’s appointment marks a significant transition in his career, bringing his extensive experience in economic policymaking to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
A Veteran Economist
Das’s appointment is seen as a strategic move, adding a seasoned economist to the PMO at a time when India is navigating complex global economic challenges. His deep understanding of both monetary and fiscal policies is expected to provide critical insights for shaping the country’s economic future.
Born on February 26, 1957, in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, Das is an alumnus of St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, where he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in History. He joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1980 as part of the Tamil Nadu cadre and held several key positions in both the Tamil Nadu state government and the central government.
Das’s tenure in the Finance Ministry saw him serve as Revenue Secretary and Economic Affairs Secretary, where he played a pivotal role in policy decisions before retiring in 2017. Additionally, he was also a member of the 15th Finance Commission.
A Landmark Tenure as RBI Governor
Shaktikanta Das was appointed as the 25th Governor of the RBI in December 2018 and held the position for six years until December 2024. His tenure was marked by significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, high inflation, and geopolitical tensions. Under his leadership, the RBI implemented measures to stabilize the economy, ensure liquidity, and maintain financial stability during turbulent periods.
Notably, Das became the second only RBI Governor to serve a full six-year term, alongside Bimal Jalan (1997-2003). He has been widely recognized for his contributions to public administration and economic policymaking. In 2021, Das was awarded a Doctor of Letters (D Litt) by Utkal University in recognition of his service.
What does his New Role Entail?
As Principal Secretary-2, Das will work alongside Pramod Kumar Mishra, the Principal Secretary-1, in managing key administrative functions of the PMO. His tenure will be co-terminus with the Prime Minister’s term or until further orders.
The Principal Secretary’s role is crucial in ensuring coordination between ministries, briefing the PM on critical matters, and facilitating discussions with foreign dignitaries. With his economic expertise, Das is expected to play a vital role in shaping government policies and addressing pressing financial issues.
With his vast experience and deep knowledge of economic governance, Das’s entry into the PMO is expected to strengthen policy formulation and decision-making at the highest level.
