Kolkata: The Bidhannagar police has recently launched a recovery cell to help victims of cybercrimes.
The cell will analyse the intricacies behind the operation of each cybercrime fraud. More importantly, it will leverage technology to identify the perpetrators of the crimes, recover the money and return to the victims.
As per Sonawane Kuldip Suresh, Deputy Commissioner, Detective Department, Bidhannagar Police, the recovery cell has identified the pattern of frauds is seasonal and mostly elderly people who are less tech savvy are more vulnerable.
During scorching summers, false warnings about disconnecting electricity connections are more prevalent, while during vacations, online hotel booking frauds take centerstage.
The idea to form the recovery cell came following the recent successes of the Bidhannagar police in arresting around 80 cyber fraudsters in the last four to five months while recovering money worth over Rs 2 crore.
The cyber crime victims were mostly senior citizens spread across Baguihati, Salt Lake, Rajarhat and New Town areas.
The police recommends an early report by the victim to give the recovery cell a better chance to recover the money. It can also identify the deep pockets from which the proceeds of the crimes can be recovered.
