Kurseong: The Darjeeling Himalayan Toy Train is a unique heritage site of India. There are now plans to revive the turntable feature in this Darjeeling Himalayan Toy Train this summer after 80 years.
With the number of tourists expected to receive a spurt in summer, this feature which enables the toy train engine to rotate 360 degree will give a further filip to tourism in North Bengal.
The Katihar division of Indian Railways has revived the turntable system after 81 years. This was inaugurated yesterday by Surendra Kumar, Divisional Manager, Katihar Division at Kurseong station.
This turntable had become defunct in 1943. With the services being closed these eight decades, most equipments have also got defunct. Three have all been repaired and are being used.
Till now, once the train reached its destination, the train had to shift lines or change tracks to turn around. Now with this turntable service, the train can turn around in the same line itself.
While the turntable had started in Kurseong, the Darjeeling Himalayan Toy Train Service plans to implement it in Darjeeling, Rongtong and a few other stations too.
