New Delhi: In a move to reduce dependency on conventional energy sources, Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Limited (CMPDIL) has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) for developing multiple solar power projects across ECL’s operational areas.
The agreement between CMPDIL and ECL outlines the implementation of ground-mounted, rooftop and floating solar installations aimed at integrating renewable energy into coal sector operations. CMPDIL will serve as the Project Management Consultant (PMC), overseeing the planning, execution and post-award management of these solar projects.
Agreement Signals Energy Shift in Coal Sector
The formal signing was conducted between Shri Sudarshan Prasad, General Manager (E&M), CMPDIL and Sarvesh Kumar, General Manager (E&M), ECL. It was held in the presence of Shri S. Nagachari, Director (Technical/CRD), CMPDIL, along with other senior officials.
This collaboration reflects a broader shift within India’s coal sector, as PSUs increasingly explore clean energy alternatives in line with national carbon neutrality and Net Zero targets. The projects are expected to help ECL gradually offset its carbon footprint and contribute to decarbonisation goals, though specific timelines and capacities were not disclosed in the statement.
Role of CMPDIL in Implementation
As PMC, CMPDIL will be responsible for ensuring the technical and logistical execution of the projects. This includes coordinating between stakeholders, managing procurement, and monitoring project progress from initiation to commissioning.
CMPDIL has previously acted as a consultant for renewable energy efforts within Coal India subsidiaries, indicating institutional continuity in coal-linked solar initiatives.
