Kolkata: The Kolkata Airport has recently formed a high-level Aerodrome Environment Management Committee to ensure uninterrupted air services at the airport.
The committee is led by West Bengal Home Secretary Nandini Chakraborty and consists of local police administration, as well as municipal officials of Dumdum, Bidhannagar and some surrounding municipalities.
The committee concluded that several high-rise buildings, high-mast hoardings, mobile towers, among others, are turning out to be obstacles for smooth and uninterrupted air services.
It was discovered there were 377 such obstacles. While 98 were removed, another 279 still remain.
The Airport Authority is greatly concerned about how to remove these obstacles. Since these involve several other bodies and agencies, the committee will play a crucial role in monitoring the overall scenario
There are hundreds of high-rise buildings where the upper portions need to be demolished. But this will involve the permission of the concerned municipalities.
There are several old talk trees which cannot be removed without the permission of the Forest Department.
The Committee will meet several times with all concerned authorities to thrash out the challenges and ensure uninterrupted air services.
