Guwahati: In a bid to build AI and data science capabilities in-house, HCLTech has partnered with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati to offer a structured academic path for employees under its TechBee program. The collaboration will provide eligible early-career professionals with access to a four-year online Bachelor of Science (Honors) degree in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.
Focus on Upskilling Through Formal Education
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two institutions aims to strengthen technical education among high school graduates who enter HCLTech through the TechBee initiative. The company plans to use the partnership to enhance its existing alternative talent pipelines by integrating academic learning with on-the-job experience.
Subbaraman B, Senior Vice President at HCLTech, said the move aligns with the company’s objective to offer diverse talent a career start while enabling them to pursue advanced education without compromising their work experience.
While HCLTech has previously engaged in skill-building programs, this degree program adds a formal academic component to an industry-driven employment model.
IIT Guwahati’s Role and Course Structure
IIT Guwahati, which has built significant research infrastructure since its inception in 1994, will lead the academic delivery of the program. The course will be conducted in an online mode, aimed at providing flexibility for working professionals while maintaining academic rigor.
Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati, stated that the collaboration was designed to make technical education in AI and Data Science more accessible to early-career professionals, aligning with the industry’s evolving talent needs.
Implications for Industry-Driven Education
The move reflects a broader industry trend where employers are beginning to integrate academic credentials into career development programs, especially in emerging areas such as artificial intelligence. This could help address the growing demand for specialized technical skills within enterprises, without relying solely on traditional university recruitment.
The partnership also points to a shift in how Indian IT firms are managing talent shortages by investing in long-term skilling and academic collaborations, particularly for candidates entering the workforce soon after high school.
While the effectiveness of such programs will depend on uptake and long-term outcomes, the HCLTech-IIT Guwahati model represents a hybrid approach combining employment and structured education, offering a new route to professional growth in the technology sector.
