Dispur: In a significant development in Assam’s police leadership, senior IPS Harmeet Singh (1992 batch) has been officially appointed as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam. The appointment was announced by the Home (A) Department, Government of Assam, and takes effect from the day he assumes charge.
Prior to this, Singh had been serving as Special DGP and holding additional charge as acting DGP since January 27, 2025. He succeeds IPS G.P. Singh in the state’s top police position. Singh will continue to hold additional responsibilities as the Director General of Civil Defence, Commandant General of Home Guards, and Director of Fire & Emergency Services in Assam.
An alumnus of St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, with a BA (Hons) in History, Singh also holds a Master’s in History from Punjab University, Chandigarh. He has built a distinguished career in areas such as counter-terrorism, cyber security, conflict resolution, child protection, de-radicalization, and emergency response. He is widely recognized for advancing technology-driven, citizen-centric policing and has played a key role in promoting smart governance and community engagement across Assam.
