New Delhi: The Centre has released the 70th edition of the Civil List of Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers in a digital-only format, with plans to incorporate artificial intelligence for more targeted officer identification. The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) launched the e-Civil List 2025 on Monday, marking the fifth consecutive year of its digital publication.
Digital Format Extended, AI Tools Proposed
The e-Civil List, published as an interactive PDF on the DoPT website, includes detailed records of all 5,577 serving IAS officers. This year’s edition introduces officer photographs and hyperlink-enabled navigation to improve usability.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh, who launched the document, said the government is exploring AI-driven functionalities to enhance the tool’s relevance. Proposed features include qualification-based and domain-specific searches, which could help identify officers for special assignments or mission-mode projects.
While access to sensitive data is expected to remain restricted, the proposed AI tools aim to support more efficient decision-making in administrative appointments. Singh also emphasized the potential to cut costs and reduce paper use by moving away from printed records.
Key Features of the 2025 Edition
Comprehensive data on serving IAS officers including name, batch, cadre, posting, pay level, and educational background
Updated retirement dates and appointment records since 1969
Cadre-wise officer strength and projected retirements
Searchable format with embedded links for quicker access
Officer photographs included for the first time
Part of Broader Digital Governance Push
The Civil List forms part of the Centre’s ongoing efforts to digitize public administration and improve transparency. It is used by departments, ministries, and researchers to assess senior-level postings and cadre planning.
Senior officials such as Rachna Shah (Secretary, DoPT), SN Tripathi (Director General, IIPA), and Sriram Taranikanti (Director, LBSNAA) were present at the launch event.
The Centre currently manages a sanctioned strength of 6,877 IAS officers, with 5,577 in active service. The e-Civil List continues to act as a reference tool for managing India’s administrative structure, with discussions now shifting toward enhancing its functionality using AI technologies.
