Hyderabad: Telangana has proposed a 370-kilometre Regional Ring Railway (RRR) project to boost transport connectivity and reduce pressure on Hyderabad’s Road infrastructure.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy submitted the proposal during his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on 24 May, positioning the rail corridor as a complement to the planned Regional Ring Road (RRR) expressway.
According to the state government, the proposed rail line will form a loop around the Hyderabad metropolitan region, mirroring the alignment of the Regional Ring Road.
The Regional Ring Railway is expected to connect industrial, IT, pharmaceutical, and logistics zones located on the outskirts of the city and will also intersect with planned dry ports and national corridors.
The project aims to improve freight movement, reduce vehicular congestion in the core city and create alternative transport options for emerging suburban and industrial zones.
In addition to the Regional Ring Railway plan, the CM Reddy urged the Centre to expedite Cabinet approvals for the northern and southern segments of the Regional Ring Road. He highlighted concerns that delays in clearing the southern stretch could escalate land acquisition and construction costs in the coming months.
The state has offered to bear 50 per cent of the land acquisition costs for both the railway and road components, to fast-track implementation. If approved, the combined ring infrastructure, road and rail could form the backbone of Telangana’s logistics and mobility network.
State officials suggest that by linking key economic zones outside the city core, the dual-ring system could support industrial dispersal, reduce freight bottlenecks, and open up underdeveloped regions for investment.
The proposal is currently under review by central ministries, with no official timeline yet for approvals or project rollout.
