New Delhi: Indian Railways is building new local train models with doors that open and close automatically once they reach and leave the station.
The Railway Board has decided to build these newly designed trains following the horrific accidents in a Mumbai local train recently.
As per officials of the Railway Rolling Stock division, these newly designed trains will be ready by November.
The passengers can ride on these trains from January 2026 onwards. Though initially these trains will be running in Mumbai, later they will be run on other routes too, where local trains get crowded.
These non-AC local trains would have automatic sliding doors. This might create a suffocating situation inside the crowded compartment.
To counter this, a ventilation unit will be set up on the roofs of each compartment. Fresh air would be pumped in through these units.
Besides, the vestibules will be opened to travel from one compartment to the other.
These changes are not very time-consuming, as local trains already have sliding doors in place. Only these will now be made automatic.
However minimum amount of interference with the doors would not let the trains run. This is a common problem faced by metros. The designs will be done keeping this in mind.
While these trains are initially being deployed in Mumbai, soon they will be run on the Sealdah division too.
