Sribhumi: The Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), Assam, has initiated a major urban water supply project under the Jal Jeevan Mission (Urban) by laying the foundation stone for a 24×7 drinking water system in Sribhumi town.Â
The Rs 81.18 crore project, launched at the old water treatment plant site along Longai Road, aims to provide a continuous tap water supply to nearly 75,000 residents across 27 municipal wards.
The project involves laying a 129-kilometer distribution network and constructing five elevated service reservoirs to ensure steady and efficient water flow throughout the town. The targeted completion date is December 2028.
Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah, who led the foundation ceremony, emphasized the project’s importance in strengthening urban infrastructure and providing uninterrupted access to clean drinking water. He noted that, of the 29,000 Jal Jeevan Mission projects planned across Assam, 14,000 have already been completed. However, he acknowledged that fund disbursement delays continue to impact the progress of remaining projects.
The event was attended by Barak Valley ministers Krishnendu Paul and Kaushik Rai, former MP Mission Ranjan Das, the District Commissioner, and other key officials, marking a milestone in the state’s push toward sustainable and inclusive urban development.
