New Delhi: India’s post offices will start accepting UPI-based digital payments at service counters across the country from August 2025, following an IT system upgrade by the Department of Posts.
The move comes under the Department of Posts’ ongoing “IT 2.0” project aimed at modernizing postal services and aligning them with India’s expanding digital payments ecosystem. Currently, post offices lack the infrastructure to process payments via the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), limiting transactions to cash or card payments in many locations.
The new system will enable customers to make payments for services like mailing, parcel booking, and others by scanning dynamic QR codes directly from their mobile phones.
A key difference from earlier attempts lies in the use of dynamic QR codes instead of static ones, which had been temporarily introduced in some post offices but were discontinued following technical issues and user complaints.
Before the nationwide rollout, the Department of Posts conducted a pilot test in Karnataka, including QR code-based payment systems at the Mysore and Bagalkot head post offices, as well as in select branch offices. The pilot confirmed the feasibility of digital transactions in the postal network, setting the stage for broader adoption.
Officials say the dynamic QR code system reduces the risk of payment errors and is more secure than the earlier static versions.
