Noida, Apr 20 (APAC Media): Chartered accountants and tax advocates have urged the government to extend the deadline for filing GSTR-3B returns for the March 2026 tax period, citing widespread technical glitches on the GST portal that disrupted filing on the due date.
The GSTR-3B return, a monthly summary filing used to report GST liabilities and claim input tax credit, is due for most taxpayers on April 20.
“The GST Portal has not been working properly today since morning. Today is the last date of GSTR-3B for Mar-26. We are not able to file returns & pay the challans on the GST Portal. OTPs are also not being delivered. Pls solve the issues.” CA Avinash Khandelwal on the X platform.
GST Portal Communication Error Disrupts Filing Process:
Professionals said the technical issues created a compliance bottleneck, particularly for businesses trying to meet statutory deadlines on time.
Several chartered accountants reported repeated failures while submitting returns, raising concerns that taxpayers may face penalties despite attempts to comply.
Professional bodies have urged the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) and the Finance Ministry to intervene and grant an extension of the due date.
They said such extensions have been granted earlier in cases of technical disruptions or exceptional circumstances, and sought similar relief this time to avoid late fees and penalties.
As of now, there has been no official announcement regarding any extension.
However, pressure continues to mount as taxpayers struggle to complete filings before the deadline.
Officials have yet to respond to the latest complaints, while professionals await clarity on whether the government will provide additional time for submission.
Tax experts noted that the GST Network has faced intermittent outages during peak filing periods, affecting compliance across multiple taxpayer categories.
They added that a short extension would help reduce compliance burden and ensure accurate reporting of tax liabilities without penalising genuine filers.
Industry stakeholders are now awaiting a response from the finance administration as the filing cycle draws to a close.
Meanwhile tax professionals continue to urge immediate intervention to restore system stability and provide relief to affected taxpayers across the country.
The request underscores ongoing concerns over digital infrastructure readiness during peak compliance deadlines in the GST regime.
