Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has decided that all heritage buildings in the city will henceforth be graded.
They will be collaborating with Shibpur IIEST to leverage technology for this graduation process.
According to KMC’s Heritage Department, there are 1392 heritage structures in the city. Out of this, 717 structures are in the Grade One category.
However, there are 305 heritage buildings or places that are yet to be graded. KMC is now embarking on gradations for these buildings.
It should be noted that these will not be graded like earlier, when it was based only on academic judgment.
Now, first, the current market rate and architectural values of the heritage structures will be surveyed.
Subsequently, the IIEST experts will scientifically study these buildings. Finally, all the data gathered will be fed into a special software which will analyse them.
The final gradations will be determined by the insights that come out of this software.
The whole world now uses this special software to determine gradations for heritage buildings and KMC too will now follow this.
KMC has also decided to put QR codes on all the current Grade One heritage structures. Once the other gradations are finalised, there are plans to redefine the gradation system for new heritage buildings too.
