Chennai: The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and Hero MotoCorp have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on research, education and workforce upskilling in future mobility technologies.
The agreement aims to strengthen industry–academia cooperation in areas such as multi-energy propulsion systems, new battery materials, electric mobility and the application of artificial intelligence in product development. Both sides said the collaboration aligns with national efforts to build technological self-reliance under Atma Nirbhar Bharat.
IIT Madras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti noted that such partnerships are central to advancing India’s long-term vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. He underlined that initiatives like scholarships, industry-linked projects and specialized academic programs can help bridge the gap between research and industrial application.
Hero MotoCorp’s Executive Director and Acting CEO, Vikram Kasbekar, said the company views joint research with academic institutions as key to building domestic capacity in mobility technologies. He stressed that the partnership would focus on developing solutions within India rather than relying on external technologies.
As part of the MoU, Hero MotoCorp will consider instituting doctoral scholarships at IIT Madras to support advanced research. The company will also provide students with access to industry projects for practical exposure. In return, IIT Madras will design degree programs, including MTech and PhD courses, for Hero employees and introduce short-term training in areas like electric vehicle development, motor controllers, and battery cell technology.
